Learning Takes Time, And That's Okay

As learning designers or educators, we're often handed fixed objectives and an allotted slot of time - a chapter in two weeks, a concept in one lesson, a course in 3 hours. The pace is decided before the learner even arrives. Yet lasting learning rarely follows those schedules.

A mango tree ripens on its own schedule, medicine takes a decade, a story may need one afternoon or many weeks. Each subject, each learner, has its own tempo. To pretend that all learning can fit into identical slots is to miss what the material itself demands.

What matters is not only what is taught, but how it is best learned - through community, discussion, practice, repetition, exploration, or divergence. In each case, the time required defines itself when the learner and the subject come together. Time therefore, is not merely a container for learning, it is the very material out of which learning is made. To provide for time is to provide for learning itself.
